Beeswax Candle Magic

Air, Earth, Fire, Water. These elemental energies effect us so deeply whether we know it or not. Fire is one of the most powerful, driven and destructive energies. And as you can imagine, in candle magic using a flame to connect with your own inner fire can be very powerful.

What is Candle Magic?

Candle magic is exactly what it sounds like. It is the practice of using candles to help you cast spells and do your workings. There are many types of candle magic and one of the most popular ways to use them is to use them as an ingredient in a spell. Most of the time candles are selected for spells because of a color association or correspondence with the subject of the spell. For example you would have a red or pink candle for a love spell, or a black candle for a protection/grounding spell. Every color has a correspondence, which brings us to using beeswax.

Yellow/Gold and its Significance/Correspondences

The yellow, gold color of beeswax makes these candles perfect for any spellwork regarding the solar plexus. Just like the sun shines its warm yellowish light onto us, we can shine our inner light out into the world. This means you can use beeswax candles to help yourself to foster;

  • abundance (gold)

  • Career progression

  • Willpower

  • Shadow work

  • Emotional elevation

  • Bringing light to darkness

  • Mental contemplation (Air correspondence)

  • and more!

Anything subject that you intentionally choose to associate with the color yellow can be a topic of a beeswax candle spell! That is the Magic of Magic, Its personal! Because everyone is so different these correspondences are not a one size fits all framework. Remember to trust yourself when choosing a spell to work with your beeswax candle. Your conscious and subconscious beliefs have power so trust yourself!

Can I Use Beeswax Candles for other spells?

Yes! Now that you know the correspondences of the color of beeswax, you can completely disregard that! Beeswax candles like white candles are able to be a clean slate for you to apply whatever energy you want to them. Using a beeswax candle and its associated golden energy of the sun can help you focus your energy to cast whatever spell you want! These are great candles to keep on hand!

Candle Dressing

Beeswax candles are great for dressing with herbs. The soft texture of the wax makes them easy to carve into with an Athame, wand or a toothpick. After you carve your intention into the candle you can apply an oil and roll the candle in ground up herbs that correspond with the subject of the spell you are casting! For more details on how to do this check out my post here.

Dressed candles have a tendency for the herbs to come off over time, so if you do decide to dress your candle with oil and herbs try to do so soon before you plan to burn your candle. If you wish to keep the candle around for a while before use, perhaps because you need to travel with it, you can also drip wax onto the herb dressed candle to encase the herbs onto the candle.

Here is an example of a dressed candle I have made by carving a beeswax candle with a toothpick, adding almond oil, and Calendula petals!

This particular candle dressing could be used to help connect with and appreciate love ones who have passed. Since Samhain is coming up soon (halloween) This would be a great candle to craft yourself!

In this case the yellow color of the candle represents my true Will to connect with entities in higher dimensions

Candle Divination

Candles can be used as a tool in divination! You can read the wax or the flame. The process of reading candle wax is called Ceromancy. This is done by burning a candle and then pouring the hot wax into cold water. Then you read the shapes of the cool wax! There are guides for meanings all over the internet, but I like to see what I can see in the wax and then ask myself what that thing represents to me. That way I have a more meaningful connection with the magic practice. The best part about this, is the beeswax globs, once read can be turned into new candles. Wax is an amazingly recyclable resource!

When you read the candle flame for divination purposes it is best to establish what a yes and what a no look like in the flame. That may mean that a yes is when the flame gets bigger and a no is when it gets smaller, or perhaps the flame will go in a certain direction as a yes or no. Once you know your question, it is best to speak it out loud to the candle so that your air and energy can connect with the candle flame. Then you will get your answer! Keep in mind, as with any type of divination if you do it to frequently the message will become muddled and less meaningful. It is better to ask one deep, well worded question than to ask 2 similar questions. It is all about intention after all. Divination is a way for us to bring our subconscious to our conscious awareness so remember that going into this. Be careful what you ask, because you may not be ready to hear the answer!

All together, beeswax candles can be used in so many fun ways for your spell-work! From spell crafting, to divination, beeswax candles are versatile magical tools! I would love to hear how you use your candles in spell-work. If you would like to share, please email your story to elderberrysprout@protonmail.com! I would love to add your pictures and stories to this post to help inspire others about how they can use candles in their practice!

And so it is!

With much love,
